I say this because it’s probably only because my mind was somewhere else that his words got lodged inside my subconscious and began to fester (…rot, what’s rot? Where does it come from?). There’s a somewhat magical thing that happened there, concepts running up the backdoor of my mind and getting comfortable, as if the best ideas just can’t use the front door like everyone else, something quite fascinating with uninvited ideas (will have to explore that later). Anyways, I was struggling with the notion that comics are text and image put together. That somehow words and pictures when collided could cause a multitude of interpretations, that’s what I always thought: Comics weren’t a medium that created additional meaning; they are one of exponential interpretations.

(Sibitt’s playing Core; this will make more sense later on)

So I get home that night and nothing happened. Nothing happened the day afterwards but two days after, I call up Scott (or e-mail him, or message him, or sent a psychic impression carried by Hermes, at this point only the end result counts) and talk to him about this book. This comic that would be a reflection on image and text, inspired by a Bleubird and Sibitt / 志人, conducted by a Scott Da Ros, because – you see – rap for me was always the musical equivalent of comics : A verbal-stylist (writer, as Bleubird would call himself) would combine his efforts with a beat-maker (illustrator) to create this work that represented more than joint efforts, it would be two arts melded together. Rap and comics, somehow it made sense, MF GRIMM would agree with me on this.

So after quite some organizing and a lot of dedication from several people, this book is now finally done, it’s an incredible feat of work made only possible by incredible people from around the globe. Somehow, when I think of this project, the idea of Babylon comes to mind. In the old myth, people of similar language came together and built a tower to the sky, where they intended to meet god. And in his immense benevolence: God destroyed the tower and created language to make sure no one would ever be able to knock on his back door ever again (especially not us pesky humans). Since that event, language has separated us and prevented us from meeting god.

Seven Days et Six Nights is a project brought to us by Scott Da Ros, Sibitt / 志人, Jacques Bruna, James Kirkpatrick, Migwel, Masaki Toda, Satoshi, Paule T.B, Martin Daraiche, Jeik Dion and Jean-Michel Berthiaume, image and sound and text, illustrations and captions, bubbles and loops, tracks, beats, onomatopoeias, commas, rhymes and scribbles, Canadians, Americans, Japanese and French artists of incredible talent who are still all reaching for heaven.

Jean-Michel Berthiaume
Heliodrome and Shibitt show, July 17 2011

Jean-Michel Berthiaume writes during shows.
